Prestwold Duathlon Race Report Marty Chamberlain (Race Director)

Sunday 21st April may well have been remembered by some for being the 2766th anniversary of the day Romulus founded Rome, but for most of us it will forever be remembered for being the date of the very first Charnwood Triathlon Club Prestwold Duathlon.

The Duathlon replaced the traditional October ‘Daylight Saving’ Club Aquathlon as Charnwood’s contribution to the East Midlands Junior Race Series (although we are planning to still run the Aquathlon in its traditional time slot – watch this space!!). Some photos of the day and a selection of the age-group winners collecting their Trophies can be found in the club online photo gallery.

Traditionally a race report would talk about the lovely (on occasion sunny!) weather we had on the day, how 200 competitors registered for the race and 186 made it to the starting line, as well as provide a blow by bow account of the relative quality of the cups of tea and bacon rolls available from Nicki’s mobile diner when compared to similar high class entrées often found at other races. However, I think everything anybody really needs to know about the race can be found in the feedback I have received since the event from parents and competitors, some of which I have included below.  Marshalls being praised for using common sense? High praise indeed!

I am delighted to say I have received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the race and its organisation from British Triathlon and the East Midland Race Series organisers.  We certainly have made our mark with this race! We have much to be proud of as a club and I am looking forwarding to seeing everybody at Prestwold next year.

As the Race Director I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everybody who volunteered for giving their time and making the day as successful as it was. However, I think an extra special mention should be given to our club treasurer Pete Cox as without him we would really struggle to put on our club races.

    Marty

“I just wanted to say a big thank you and well done for yesterday. The event was the best organised one that my son and I have attended and we are already looking forward to next year.”

“Just a thank you for today.  My kids returned from their first race with big smiles. A really well organised and friendly event. Thank you to all the organisers and volunteers.”

“The event was very well organised, the stewards were friendly and helpful and the weather was kind, so the kids really enjoyed the event. See you again next year”

“This is the first first duathlon we've experienced and we all really enjoyed it; as parents and our son who was racing. The whole event was very well organised, results very prompt, briefing very thorough and marshals knowledgeable and approachable. Thank you for a great event, we look forward to next year!”

“A brill morning!  Thanks to yourself and your team of kind and smiley marshals”

“Both my sons competed yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Really pleased with relaxed common sense approach and the boys clearly understood what they had to do. Thanks again and we look forward to competing again next year.”

  • Club Championship 2013

Posted by Nobody on 23 February 2013

This year we are hoping to encourage more members to participate in the club championship. So, rather than specifying which races to take part in, we will allow any races to count. This will mean that entrants will need to record their time and the time of the fastest competitor in that race in their category (age and sex). Their score can then be calculated as a percentage over the fastest time. If you are the fastest you score 100. If your time is a quarter faster than the fastest you score 125 etc.

The best 3 scores will count and the score nearest 100 wins. Events can be sprint, olympic, middle or long distance, but including a longer distance race gives and advantage.

To encourage club members to take part in Key events, they will score double (half percentage) for the following events:-

    East Leake   31st March 2013

    Southwell     5th May 2013

    Blithfield       4th August 2013

    Derby           15th September 2013

Details of the rules and conditions are on the club website

  • British Triathlon Championships

Posted by Nobody on 31 January 2013

This new event concept has been created following recommendations from the 2011 British Triathlon Competition Review, which cited the need to raise the game of British Championships across all participant categories to make them aspirational events for people to take part in.

British Triathlon has worked hard to develop a single weekend event where elite, paratriathlon and age-group athletes can join together over one festival weekend to race for British Championship medals.

Additionally in 2013, the British Age-Group Standard Distance Triathlon Championships will also act as the final qualification race for athletes across Great Britain looking to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team, which will compete in London as part of the World Triathlon Grand Final London in September.

The event, which will take place over the weekend of 13 and 14 July 2013, is expected to attract thousands of athletes competing for the following British Championships:

    • British Elite Sprint Triathlon Championships
    • British Youth & Junior Triathlon Championships
    • British Paratriathlon Championships
    • British Age-Group Standard Distance Triathlon Championships, incorporating the final ITU Standard Distance Age-Group Triathlon World Championships qualification event for the Great Britain Age-Group Team

British Triathlon has also committed to provide Home Nation Members priority access to the event, ensuring those who wish to attempt to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team for the ITU Standard Distance Age-Group Triathlon World Championships in London have the maximum opportunity to do so. All entry details will be announced next month with Home Nation members receiving advance notice of the entry process via email and an exclusive entry period before the event is opened up to non member entry.
